Net Time, sometimes called Chip Time, is the time taken for you to complete the distance between crossing one timing point to another timing point, regardless of what time the starting horn went off. Net time is a personal time and is used only for your personal reference. It is most uncommon for any race to award prizes based on Net Time, although acknowledgement is often given of such times, particularly for ‘club’ events. Net time is either the same as or faster than your Gross Time because it doesn’t include the time it took you to reach the start line from the sound of the starting horn.
Gross Time is the time from the starting horn to when you cross the next or last timing point. Gross Time indicates the order that you finish in e.g. the first person to cross the finish line has the quickest Gross Time, the second person to cross the finish line has the second fastest Gross Time and so on and hence as it represents the order in which participants cross the finish line it is the accepted international standard time for the awarding of finish rank and prizes
If the race is timed with timing chips, why are the results not shown as Net (Chip) Times?
Wearing a timing chip enables us to calculate both your Gross and Net Time although, as explained above, for official results only your Gross Time will be displayed. Your Net (Chip) Time is for you own personal information only.
How can I view my Net Times?
Most races only display Gross Times however you can view ALL your times, including split times, averages, category rank and position and lots of other interesting data by purchasing your own Classic ChampionChip. Classic ChampionChips are valid for life, give you great extra benefits and best of all you don’t have to worry about collecting or returning it ever again, it simply stays on your shoe/bike/ankle strap. Races that offer Online Timing Certificates may also choose to display split and Net Times on the certificate downloads.
