The Ear
The Ear deserves its name, because it does a lot of listening:
- It listens to other timing systems and synchronises wireless when needed
- Multiple Ears can listen and synchronise their times wirelessly to one master ear before the event
- It listens to the gunshot. This allows all ChampionChip equipment to use the same start time as the official time.
- It can be used as a DeskReader, and listens to the 7digit character-code transmitted by the transponders.
The Ear is responsible for:
- Switching on and off the antennas on the road
- Keeping accurate time
- Data storage (chip codes and times)
- Passing on data to the central computer
- The Ear device connects to the Controllers and to a central computer.
The connection between the Ear and central computer can be made with a direct serial line or regular modem (wire), or by means of a cellular modem (wireless). The Ear holds a heavy-duty battery which has a capacity of 24 hours.

The DigiCase combines a digital controller and an Ear in one Pelican case. This means that the DigiCase can be used in combination on its own or as an Ear. |
